Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome / Studio Odile Decq - 2007 - Rome - Italy
Received: 1 March 2014
From the architect. The high-gloss roof of Rome’s Museum of Contemporary Art was conceived by Odile Decq as a promenade linking the late 19th-century surroundings to the enigma of presentday art. Her design crowns the existing building, the old Peroni beer brewery, with a roof terrace that gives visitors the chance to see the city from a new viewpoint.

The Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, located in downtown Santiago, Chile has just received an expansion of 70% that has allowed it to increase display areas, storage space and its conservation laboratories. Due to an investment of $17 million and a long-term alliance between BHP Billiton and Minera Escondida, the Museum was able to renew its facilities and open its doors to the public this month after 2 years of construction.

Danish Maritime Museum / BIG, by Hufton + Crow - Helsingor - Denmark
Received: 1 March 2014
The talented photographers of Hufton + Crow have shared with us their visual archive of Bjarke Ingels’ recently completed Danish Maritime Museum. Built within the crevasse of a dry dock in the historic surrounds of Helsingor’s Kronborg Castle, the subterranean museum is visible only as an imprint of a ship. By looping the museum around the dock’s 60-year-old walls, Ingles was able to preserve the heritage structure while transforming it into a courtyard that provides daylight deep into the heart of the museum.

FRAC Bretagne Museum / Studio Odile Decq
Received: 1 March 2014
The new building for the FRAC is the first of new contemporary art museums to be realized in France. It combines the main functions of conservation, exhibiting as well as diffusion of knowledge about art throughout a library, a conference room and educational services. The main façade offers a silent setting in respect to Nemours art work installed in front of the FRAC, but, inside, the building reveals itself in an unexpected complexity, catching the visitor by the strength full and sensual expression of the vertical void running over the entire building’s height.

A series of overlapping shells are sculpted to form a bowl like structure, providing shelter from the wind and waves of the Welsh coast. Niyang River Visitor Center / Standardarchitecture + Zhaoyang Architects - 2009- Nyingchi, Xizang (Tibet), China
Received: 2 March 2014
From the architect. Mirui Road is a tourist road that meets Highway 318 connecting Tibet and Sichuan province. This road meanders southwards along the Niyang River. Within this 20km distance to the Brahmaptra Canyon, the specific terrain and landscape of Niyang River can be enjoyed from the road. Daze Village was chosen to be the entrance to this tourist attraction. There is little land left for further development in this village, therefore the river beach along the road was the only choice for the site of a tourist center.

Castillo De La Luz Museum / Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos
Received: 2 March 2014
From the architect. The Castillo de la Luz is for the city of Las Palmas not only one of the most significant buildings of its architectural heritage, but a witness to the historical memory of the archipelago. Its location on the Isleta, the point of arrival of the Castilian fleets since the fifteenth century when the first fortification was founded, was the reason for its existence and its defensive role until the nineteenth century. The passage of time has not only significantly affected its use and conservation, but also its immediate environment: the ancient fortress on the coast that was surrounded by water at high tide, is today surrounded by the buildings of Puerto de la Luz and the advancement of the city to the Isleta.

Musée à vendre pour cause de faillite: Herbert Foundation and mumok in dialogue - Austria
Received: 17 March 2014
The Annick and Anton Herbert Collection is one of the most significant private collections of contemporary art in Europe. The Belgian couple began to purchase art in the wake of the political and social upheavals of the 1968 movement. They were fascinated by those developments that promoted new concepts of art and the artwork—parallel to contemporary endeavors for social renewal. The Herberts bought important works by American and European representatives of Minimal Art and Conceptual Art, including Carl Andre, Art & Language, Marcel Broodthaers, Hanne Darboven, Dan Graham, Donald Judd, On Kawara, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Gerhard Richter, Niele Toroni, and Lawrence Weiner. As from the mid-1980s, with works by Martin Kippenberger, Franz West, and Mike Kelley, key figures from a next generation were added to the collection. The last artist to join so far was Heimo Zobernig.

The British Museum presents its first major exhibition on Vikings in over 30 years- London - United Kingdom - 20 March - 22 June 2014
Received: 17 March 2014
The Vikings are renowned as bloodthirsty warriors, but a new exhibition at the British Museum aims to show the cultural achievements and trading skills that spread their influence far and wide. "Vikings: Life and Legend", which opens on Thursday and runs until June 22, seeks to go beyond the stereotypical image of terrifying bearded axemen, raping and pillaging their way around Europe between the ninth and 11th centuries.

MUSEX Platform of collaboration for cultural institutions
Received: 21 March 2014

SCAM ALERT: Fake certificates of authenticity and fake "Laissez-passer ICOM-UNESCO"
Received: 26 March 2014
UNESCO and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) have been alerted to an online scam offering fake certificates of authenticity and a “Laissez-passer ICOM-UNESCO”. These fraudulent websites, claim to provide certificates of authenticity permitting the unrestricted import and export of African cultural heritage in return for a fee.
This fee is then, according to these websites, shared between UNESCO, ICOM, the national museums and the Ministries of Arts and Culture in the country in question. THIS IS NOT TRUE.
Art collectors and tourists (notably in the West African region) are falling victim in relation to this scam.
UNESCO and ICOM encourage the exercise of vigilance when taking part in transactions involving cultural heritage property, in particular African artifacts.

Spain's National Archaeological Museum opens after six-year renovation
Received: 7 April 2014
Spain's National Archaeological Museum reopened to the public on Tuesday after a massive six-year overhaul that aims to offer a state-of-the-art space for its collection of ancient artefacts.
The redesign of one of Madrid's largest museums, housing items from prehistoric times until the 19th century, began in 2008 and cost EUR 65.2 million (USD 89.8 million).
It has incorporated new audiovisual displays, maps and graphic panels to give greater context to the objects on display, which include Greek vases, Roman mosaics and ancient sacred artefacts.
The collection is spread around two interior courtyards now bathed in natural light thanks to new larger windows.
In the first room visitors will be greeted be two giant walls of images projected onto 350 small screens.

Museum of the Fangshang Geopark / BIAD - 2009 - Fangshan - Beijing - China
Received: 10 April 2014
From the architect. The most basic meaning of the word “nature” is two-fold. In ancient Greece, “nature” referred to the inherent characteristics of growth and movement in everything. On the other hand, “nature” was regarded by ancient Chinese sages as a “Tao” intrinsically followed by everything, including humans, representing the characteristics grown and developed internally rather than being forced upon externally. Nature stands for the unity of time and space that, by following its own way of evolution, enjoys continuous development, and forms an organic whole based on self-organized evolution.
