Nuevo museo bajo tierra en Valparaíso / ¿Una fortificación o antiguo alcantarillado? (Chile)

Naxos - Paisagens de uma Cidade Antiga (Naxos - Landscapes of an Ancient City)
Naxos - Paisagens de uma Cidade Antiga (Naxos - Landscapes of an Ancient City) — free for download and share — is a short documentary directed by the architect and archaeologist Silvio Luiz Cordeiro and presents two urban forms built in different times in the ancient Naxos, which is considered the first polis founded in Sicily (VIII BC). From the work of a team headed by the Italian archaeologist Maria Costanza Lentini, this video shows the implantation of an orthogonal grid (V BC), imposing itself on the previous form, setting up a new and monumental urban landscape.

Antiga Amazônia Presente (Ancient Amazonia Today)
Antiga Amazônia Presente (Ancient Amazon Today) is the first feature documentary about Amazonian archaeology produced only by a team of Brazilian archaeologists.
Directed by Silvio Luiz Cordeiro, the documentary was recorded during several trips in the Lower Amazon and presents ancient places which are still relatively unknown by the general public.
The production team visited urban archaeological sites and other more distant sites, like the rock art found in the Serra do Ererê (Monte Alegre), and the cultural landscape built by the marajoara people in the past. The team also documented the impressive collection storage of the Goeldi Museum (Belém); the artifacts exhibited in the Marajó Museum, gathered by the Jesuit Giovanni Gallo; the archaeological and historical collection of the Integrated Museum of Obidos; as well as a small collection of Tapajônica pieces, gathered by a family from Santarém. However, the most significant part of this audiovisual and photographic collection created by the team on the trip are the stories of the people who, for several reasons, maintain a relationship with places and objects from the world of Amazonian archaeology, giving meanings and values to them today.
Free for download and share.

Internships: Aegean Prehistory Study Centre for East Crete (INSTAP-SCEC), Greece - Deadline: 31 January 2016
Two internships in archaeological conservation are available at the Institute for Aegean Prehistory Study Centre for East Crete (INSTAP-SCEC) during the summer of 2016. These internships are available for 6-8 weeks between June 1, 2016 and July 31, 2016.
The conservation lab is responsible for material excavated by several American and Greek teams, including those working at Mochlos, Azoria, and Gournia. Interns participate fully in the work of the lab, which includes lifting fragile artifacts on site, examining and treating priority finds, and dialogue with material specialists. The 2016 internships will focus primarily on the treatment of archaeological ceramics. The lively INSTAP-SCEC offers interns the chance to meet students and experts in a variety of fields from many different universities. It also hosts a summer lecture series, has an excellent library and is a good base for exploring the archaeology of Crete.

International team of bioarchaeologists get under the skin of a Medieval mystery - York - United Kingdom
A simple PVC eraser has helped an international team of scientists led by bioarchaeologists at the University of York to resolve the mystery surrounding the tissue-thin parchment used by medieval scribes to produce the first pocket Bibles.
Thousands of the Bibles were made in the 13th century, principally in France but also in England, Italy and Spain. But the origin of the parchment -- often called ‘uterine vellum’ -- has been a source of longstanding controversy.
Use of the Latin term abortivum in many sources has led some scholars to suggest that the skin of fetal calves was used to produce the vellum. Others have discounted that theory, arguing that it would not have been possible to sustain livestock herds if so much vellum was produced from fetal skins. Older scholarship even argued that unexpected alternatives such as rabbit or squirrel may have been used, while some medieval sources suggest that hides must have been split by hand through use of a lost technology.

Stonehenge 'bluestone' quarries confirmed by team of archaeologists 140 miles away in Wales
Excavation of two quarries in Wales by a UCL-led team of archaeologists and geologists has confirmed they are sources of Stonehenge’s ‘bluestones’– and shed light on how they were quarried and transported.
New research by the team published in Antiquity presents detailed evidence of prehistoric quarrying in the Preseli hills in Pembrokeshire, helping to answer long-standing questions about why, when and how Stonehenge was built.
The team of scientists includes researchers from UCL, University of Manchester, Bournemouth University, University of Southampton, University of Leicester, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, and Dyfed Archaeological Trust.
