UNESCO Director-General and President Vladimir Putin discuss protection of cultural heritage in conflict zones in Iraq and Syria
On 14 December 2015, Ms. Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, and H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, jointly opened the IV Saint Petersburg International Cultural Forum, devoted to the 70th anniversary of UNESCO. The Forum was the largest cultural event to mark the seven decades of the Organization’s role and contribution worldwide in support of culture and heritage.
“We are here to celebrate the power of culture”, stated the Director-General in her keynote address.
“When culture is under attack and when extremists seek to destroy the common heritage of humanity, we need to respond to ignorance, hatred, and violence with more culture, with more knowledge”, she said.

Director-General welcomes COP21 agreement and underlines the momentum in changing minds not the climate
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today welcomed the historic agreement reached by participants at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. “Beyond this ambitious and balanced agreement, COP21 has created a momentum in changing peoples’ minds and preparing them to embrace the economic and life-style adjustments we all need to make to preserve human life on the planet,” Ms Bokova said.
“Changing minds, not the climate” has been UNESCO’s motto at COP21. The Organization’s programmes and expertise were showcased in a wide range of side events during the Conference, highlighting the potential of the natural and social sciences, ocean research, education and culture to foster new approaches to development with a view to reaching the goals of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, adopted by the General Assembly in September…

“Our living heritage holds many answers to the questions we face today”
On 12 December, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, took part in the inauguration of the international forum entitled "The contribution of UNESCO Member States of South-Eastern Europe to the dissemination and implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2003", held in Sofia on the occasion of UNESCO’s 70th anniversary.
The event brought together participants from all South-East European countries including experts on intangible cultural heritage and representatives of state institutions and universities to explore the role of Member States of SEE in supporting UNESCO’s efforts to promote and preserve the world’s intangible cultural heritage…
