Attack of the stinging jellyfish: the winners of ocean acidification
Rising levels of carbon dioxide don't just cause global warming, writes Jason Hall-Spencer. Another consequence is acidifying oceans - which promises to disrupt marine ecology around the world, killing off oysters and corals, while boosting 'nuisance species' like stinging jellyfish.
For most marine biologists, myself included, it wasn't until 2005 that it dawned on us that a third of all human-caused carbon dioxide emissions are dissolving into and acidifying the sea.
By driving down seawater pH (and increasing acidity), these emissions are increasingly bad news for marine organisms that build their protective shells and skeletons out of calcium carbonate. What Are We Actually Protecting In The Ocean?
One of the great recent success stories in conservation is the rapid increase in the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs). Since 2006, there has been a staggering growth of 10 million km2 of new MPAs globally, a nearly four-fold increase over the past decade.
In 2010 in Aichi Japan, the global community established a number of conservation targets through the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with one (Aichi Target 11) aimed at setting aside a full 10 percent of the earth’s oceans – especially ‘areas of particular importance for biodiversity’ – by 2020. This target is intended to drive MPA establishment this decade.
Yet there has been no baseline for measuring how well our marine species are represented in protected areas. Until now…
